I am trying to play the natural feelings of [the black] people. . ”6 In 1927, one of the top spots in Harlem, the Cotton Club, needed a new orchestra. However, the club wanted an eleven-piece orchestra, and Ellington only had eight. Ellington passed the word that he needed people, and arrived at the audition with the required number. The only problem was, he was two hours late. All the other groups had performed. That was no problem. The managing owner, Harry Block, was also two hours late.

They missed performances when important people in the music business were in the audience, coming especially to hear Ellington’s sound, featuring Miley. Ellington was not good at firing anyone. He eventually worked out a technique of making life so unpleasant for a band member that he would quit. Without warning, Ellington would set the tempo at an impossible speed, then give the cue for the drunken performer to come forward and do his solo piece. The humiliation would either sober him up or make him decide to quit.

3 By 1955, Ellington grabbed any musical gig he could find. The lowest point came when the group played mood music for several weeks for the Aquacades, a water show in Queens, New York. Ellington was not even hired as the conductor. The show hired his orchestra. Ellington played a medley of his hits on the piano, then left. Despite this low period, Ellington could not stop composing. He used the free time to write a musical play, The Man with Four Sides. However, it was never performed during his lifetime.
