At this stage although I have never actually done anything officially, I have had quite a good education. And the satisfaction of knowing that if I want to do something I can do it. It is easy for people to benefit from their formal education if they are offered respect and adequate resources. These are there for some social/political groups.

So that’s what I did. I came away from school with quite good results but it was due to getting books out and studying things for myself, catching up on things that I didn’t understand in class, from when I got home till 10 o’clock at night, just to get things sorted out. When I left school, all the doubts about what I had been learning came true because I ended up down the pit. ’ I was sick of poring through books, studying things that I never thought I would use. The things that I have learned since are things that I have learned because I find them interesting, such as languages.

But my husband was one of those men who thinks that as a woman I should not be educated. He did not help. I failed but I took it again. I can’t remember if I passed it the second time or the third time but I was determined. I kept going back until I passed. On my own, I passed. And now I am 60 years old and I am doing my A-level. The boys are off and I am settled. This is the new house. Now that I am here and I am comfortable and I am happy, I just want to prolong my education so that I read and read and read and it is my friend, it is my company, it is my teacher, it is my everything.
